Foreword The carbon balance of the Russian forests has gained a lot of international interest over the last 10 years. IIASA has over the years put in substantial efforts, through the Forest Resources Project, in trying to contribute to the knowledge about the carbon budget of the Russian forests.team of IIASA's Forest Resources Project, is an effort to summarize IIASA's current understanding of the carbon budget of the Russian forests.

A synthesis of the impact of Russian forests on the global carbon budget for 19611998

An attempt is made to synthesize the current understanding of the impact of Russian forests on the global carbon (C) budget for the period 1961–1998 (37 years), based on a detailed inventory of pools and fluxes in 1988–1992, and a historical reconstruction of a full forest carbon budget for 1961–1998. All major intermediate indicators of the budget (phytomass, net primary production, impact of ...

Soil contribution to carbon budget of Russian forest

The flux of CO2 from the soil to the atmosphere – soil respiration (RS), is one of the least known components of the terrestrial carbon cycle. RS depends on many factors and varies substantially in time and space. High uncertainty of RS flux valuation leads to a wide range of reported carbon budget estimates for Russian forests. We developed a modeling system for assessing soil carbon stock and...

Long-Term Record of Sampled Disturbances in Northern Eurasian Boreal Forest from Pre-2000 Landsat Data

Stand age distribution is an important descriptor of boreal forest structure, which is directly linked to many ecosystem processes including the carbon cycle, the land–atmosphere interaction and ecosystem services, among others. Almost half of the global boreal biome is located in Russia. The vast extent, remote location, and limited accessibility of Russian boreal forests make remote sensing t...

Evaluation of carbon sequestration service of forests – A Russian case-study

Prerequisites of a system methodology of evaluation of carbon sequestration service of forests (CSS) inter alia include: 1) need of assessment of the CSS in biophysical terms, in form of the Full Verified Carbon Account (FCA); 2) an ultimate proxy indicator of the FCA is Net Ecosystem Carbon Budget of forest ecosystems (NECB); 3) need of explicit spatio-temporal distribution of the service (in ...

Continental Scale Validation of a Dynamic Forest Model with Remotely Sensed Satellite Imagery

The Russian boreal forest is one of the largest terrestrial biomes on the planet and its behavior has significant consequences for global and regional climate, the Russian economy, and the global carbon cycle. In order to make projections about the future of Russian forests, a fine-scale dynamic forest model FAREAST was run and tested throughout the country under a variety of climate and distur...
